The History of Torrey's Web Site and Ape Camp
The Beginning
On August 29, 1995, I signed up for an account with Exec-PC out of Milwaukee. On August 30, 1995, with the help of friends, I published my first page on the web at the address of "www.execpc.com/~torrey/". I continued adding pages and features to the web site.
Before the Beginning
Interestingly, one of the first web pages I created in September of 1995 was a page about the band Ten Years After. The writing I used for that web page was actually based on a text file I wrote and uploaded to various Bulletin Board Services (BBS) before the web was really a thing. Back in the day, if you wanted to download content from a BBS, you often had to upload new content to receive download credit. This encouraged content creation. Hence, although updated many times since, the Ten Years After page has roots going back to BBS days making it the oldest page on this website.
Becoming Ape Camp
Then on July 31, 2002, CoreComm, the current owner of Exec-PC, changed the "www" in my web address to "my". Everything still worked, but I was annoyed by this arbitrary change. I decided it was time to move the site to a domain that I controlled. On September 7, 2002 I set up an account with ICDSOFT to host the domain of www.apecamp.com. I had registered the apecamp.com domain a few weeks before. I've always liked camping and of course anything having to do with primates is always cool. Plus, a camp is a place, just as a web site is a place. Ape Camp really seems like the right name for this web site. As I moved each page, I improved the code and content of each file. This of course took longer, but helped Ape Camp get started on the right foot. I completed the move from Exec-PC and continued to make improvements and updates for a few years.
The Era of Little Change
But other commitments started to consume my time. And by late 2006, Ape Camp became very stagnent. This lack of changes would conintue until April of 2022, when I finally decided that it was time to dive in and and start to get things up to date. I decided the first page to update would be this history page. So the process of updating the content and underlying code base has started. Ape Camp is in the middle of change once again.
